Gaushala - Indian Cow Shelter

Aims to establish a gaushala which facilitates the imparting of practical knowledge regarding cultivating cows to people from all over India who are currently either researching on the cow or are keen to do so.

The objective is two-fold:

  • Promote a cow-based economy for physical and emotional wellbeing and discover how it can be a self-sustainable model;
  • Educate people at large on the hidden life of cows and the symbiotic relationship between the two.

To start with, the intent is to setup a Gau Retreat( Cow Therapy ) on the premises of Arogyam. For this, we propose to plant a forest. The forest will be peopled by a variety of trees, herbs, bushes and shrubs that are not only great sources of oxygen but also have considerable medicinal value. It is this verdant, therapeutic forest that will be the grazing pastures for the cows.

It is widely believed that the cow will eat from a particular tree or bush that is therapeutic for her helper or sevak if he or she contracts an illness. While one may or may not subscribe to such claims anymore, traditional Indian systems of medicine have for long sung of the benefits of cow products. In fact, cow-pathy which is a ‘new’ domain of natural healing process involving products such as cow urine and panchagavya is gaining momentum among medics and users.

We are trying to run two  cow shelters one is in Tihar Jail No.-3, at New Delhi second is Arogyam Gaushla, Village Teharki, Sohana Palwal Road, Palwal, Hariyana  for the many benefits they provide.

Holistic Benefits: It is well recorded in our scriptures and ancient science about the benefits of the cow in the mental well-being of humans. Spending a few minutes daily with a cow can reduce the blood pressure and stress levels in humans. A feeling of love and compassion is developed naturally in humans who come in contact with cows. Since cows symbolize Universal Mother and a Deity wherein all the gods and goddesses reside, the people who take care of cows are truly blessed and their problems get solved.

Medical Benefits: Cow urine is known as a kind of Ayurveda medicine.  Several diseases can be cured with it. Apart from this, medicines prepared from Cow Ghee, Curd and Dung can also cure several ailments.  Thus, the inmates of Tihar Jail can lead a healthy life by consuming the medicines prepared from panch-gavyas.

Economic Benefits: The milk produced from the desi cows is very rich in proteins and vitamins.  Moreover the fat in the cow milk is human friendly since this fat melts at 37 degrees which is the human body temperature.

Ghee and Curd can also be produced in-house and more economic benefit can be accrued. The gas produced in the bio-gas plant will be used for cooking.

Holy Cow Foundation can also provide contacts for preparing of medicines from panch-gavyas as well as dhoop, agarbattis, phenyl, mosquito coils and various other products.  The profits from these products will help in funding the growth of the gaushala.

Social Benefits:    This model can also be replicated in other communities for the holistic, medical and economic benefit of the population.
